That is nice, but at least as important is that Dirac now gets a new architecture so that in the future it can easily be expanded and improved with new modules that do something specific. What is immediately noticeable is that the interface is fully adapted.
Dirac live not picing up arcam 550 update#
Why do we now dedicate a longer piece to Dirac again? Because the software now has a substantial update to Dirac Live 2. Both in the form of a background piece about what Dirac is and in the margin of tests of AV receivers as the Arcam AVR-550 and NAD T 758 v3. We have already written about this software of Swedish origin that is built into more and more audio products but that can also run separately on a PC. In this article we look at the new version of Dirac, Dirac Live 2, for home use, Dirac Live 2.x. It is of course also usable with existing Dirac partners, such as miniDSP and Storm Audio. Arcam, NAD and Rotel, among others, recently embrace the new Dirac software, Dirac Live 2. That’s good, because at the same time more surround and stereo devices with Dirac appear on board. A thoroughly reworked version now makes the software more accessible to a larger audience. Or watch out for a used Arcam 850 / Lexicon RV9 which have Dirac and 7 channels of amplification (just add a cheap amp for the 4 overheads).Dirac was already one of the best room correction solutions available.

Plus the Monoprice has 16 channels so you could expand to 9.1.6. If you don’t need a ton of power you could get 11 ch amplification fairly cheaply, like a Outlaw 5000 at $649 for the 5 main channels and a used Rotel RMB-1066 or Adcom 5006 for $250-300 to run the remaining 6 channels (back surround and overheads).

If that unit is stable and bug free it will be a dynamite value at $4k msrp. If you have that kind of budget I would keep my eyes on initial reviews for the Monoprice HTP which is due to drop in a couple of months.

From there you’d have to go up to expensive processors, or the Arcam / AudioControl / Lexicon AVR models, which are going to entail $5K+ investment. The NAD units are the cheapest boxes with Dirac built in. Of course the vast majority of Dirac equipped units are pre/pros so you’d need external amps anyway. However this requires external amplification for the 7 ear level speakers since the MiniDSP unit would sit inline between the processor and amps. Use that on the 7.1 main channels and either just run the heights without EQ or use some other cheaper method to tweak them (perhaps the processor has some internal PEQ or Graphic EQ capabilities). If you already have a processor you like, the best bang for the buck would be add a MiniDSP 88A module which gives you 8 channels of Dirac.
